Mission

Vision

The St. Elmo Center for Gifted Education and the MCSD Gifted Department is committed to providing an environment that nurtures the unique learning characteristics, interests and capabilities of gifted and talented students.  Within this environment students are encouraged to realize their potential and develop a desire to use their talents and abilities to continue to set higher goals in their educational and social lives.

Through rigor, collaboration and higher level learning, students will develop appropriate skills, concepts, and attitudes that will involve their own learning in order to become independent, self-directed life-long learners who will demonstrate and fully understand and accept the diversity of self and others.

Upcoming Events

Housand Hollers

St. Elmo celebrates its
80th birthday in 2010 and its
20th birthday as the Gifted Program.
Watch for celebration information!!!
If you are an alumni, please let us hear from you!!!!

We will be selling coupon booklets from Bruster's in the next few weeks.  They contain Buy-one-get-one-free coupons.  They will sell for $10.00.  St. Elmo will make $4.00 per booklet.  These make great gifts!

We hope everyone is doing well and settling in the school year.  We are so thankful for our St. Elmo families and want to be sure that you know this during the holiday season.

Remember to visit your student during lunch.  We have a wonderful meal every day, provided by the cafeteria staff from Columbus High School.  First graders eat at 11:10, 2nd and 3rd graders begin around 11:20 and 4th and 5th begin eating at 11:30.  We do welcome our parents in the school but do want to remind them that the instructional time is valuable and the students are easily distracted.

We are collecting can goods in partnership with Publix.  Please help us help the less fortunate in our community by sending a can or two.  This is a wonderful way to teach our students character education.

We were not able to secure a gift wrapping date at Barnes & Noble’s as first indicated but will have other events going on further in the year.

The Greater Columbus Association of Gifted Children, St. Elmo group, will meet on Tuesday, November 17 at 6:30 in the auditorium.  We encourage each of you to join and attend.  We will be discussing possible SPLOST improvements at this meeting and would love your input.

4th and 5th grade movie night is this Friday, November 13.  Thanks to the teachers for providing this wonderful opportunity to our students.

We are wrapping up the orders for our cancer shirts and appreciate your patience as we gather enough orders to send off.  We are also giving you the opportunity to pre-order long sleeve shirts (see the form on the back) for the cooler weather.  The questionnaire we sent home overwhelming indicated that the students would like a long sleeve shirt and we would love for the students to wear their shirt every week.  The cut-off date for this order is December 4th.  The check should be made out to GCAGC.

We do want to remind parents that the students should attend St. Elmo every week.  It is the student’s right to receive the instruction provided for them and they deserve that.  A conference is required if a student has more than three absences according to the state policies.  Also, students should not be kept at their home school on their St. Elmo day to make up work, take tests or make presentations.

You should have received a copy of the makeup policy for gifted identified students at the beginning of the school year.

Please help us to give your student the gifted instruction that they deserve.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

-Mrs. Housand, Director
